California priest to lead Men’s Silent Retreat at Nazareth center

The following story appeared in the April 30 Idaho Catholic Register.

Father Sy Nguyan

Father Sy Nguyan, pastor of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Yorba Linda, Ca., returns to Boise to lead the seventh annual Men’s Seventh Annual Silent Retreat from Tuesday evening June 15 through Thursday morning, June 17.

Father Nguyan is leading participants through the theme, “Come Away by Yourselves to a Deserted Place and Rest Awhile.”

This is the final retreat for the Nazareth Retreat Center, 4450 N. Five Mile Rd., in Boise. Beginning July 1, the Center becomes the new monastery for Verbum Spei, a religious congregation for men.

Father Nguyan was ordained to the priesthood in 1991. Bishop Tod Brown, formerly Bishop for the Diocese of Boise and later bishop for the Diocese of Oranga, Calif., sent Father Nguyan to study Canon Law at the Gregorian University from 2001 to 2003. He then served as the adjutant judicial vicar at the Tribunal for the Diocese of Orange for five years, four of which he was its director. He was also the director of the Vietnamese Catholic Center for two years.

As participants draw closer to Christ through silence, they also have opportunities for Reconciliation, Adoration, daily Mass and spiritual direction.

In order to comply with COVID-19 safety recommendations and to provide for optimal silence in a small group setting, the retreat is in-person only with a maximum of 25 participants. Staying overnight at the center is encouraged for the full benefit of the retreat.

The fee, including meals and lodging, is $220. To attend without lodging, the fee is $120. The deadline for registration is June 1.
